Soumyashree Self-Immolation Case: SP Routray Replaces IG Shyni Amid Probe Shake-Up

August 7, (OT WEbdesk): In a major shake-up in the investigation into the tragic death of Soumyashree Bisi, a student from Fakir Mohan University, Inspector General S Shyni has stepped down from her role.

The case, which has ignited statewide protests and demands for justice, will now be led by Crime Branch SP Anirudha Routray.

Soumyashree allegedly died by self-immolation following prolonged harassment, triggering widespread outrage.

The probe was initially handled by the Crime Against Women and Children Wing under IG Shyni, but her sudden departure—coinciding with the arrest of two ABVP activists—has raised concerns about the investigation’s impartiality.

Student groups and civil society organisations across Odisha are calling for a transparent and swift inquiry. Allegations of institutional negligence have intensified scrutiny on both the university and law enforcement agencies.

SP Routray now faces the challenge of restoring public trust and ensuring justice for Soumyashree and her family.
