Snakes Out of Danda Yatra: RCCF Cracks Down on Wildlife Use

The Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF), Berhampur Circle, has imposed a strict ban on the use of snakes and other wildlife in cultural performances during the upcoming Danda Yatra festival.

The directive comes after reports that some drama committees were incorporating reptiles into stage plays and social dramas, violating multiple laws.

The RCCF highlighted that such practices breach the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.

Violators face legal consequences, including penalties under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act.

Forest officers have been instructed to maintain vigilance, coordinate with district collectors and police, and initiate legal proceedings against offenders.

Awareness campaigns will also be conducted in villages to educate organisers about the ban and promote animal welfare.

Officials stressed that while Danda Yatra remains a vibrant cultural tradition, it must not compromise wildlife protection or ethical standards.

The move aims to safeguard biodiversity while preserving the festival’s spirit.
