Smoke Scare at Paradip Port: Coal-Laden Ship Sparks Panic, Situation Under Control

Paradip Port witnessed a tense moment on Sunday morning when thick smoke billowed from a coal-laden vessel during loading operations at the IOB berth.

The ship, MV Eco Colonel Monrovia, carrying thermal coal, began emitting heavy smoke as the cargo overheated, raising fears of a fire outbreak.

Authorities acted swiftly, relocating the vessel to CQ-2 berth and initiating unloading procedures to minimise risk. Firefighters doused the coal with water, successfully suppressing the smoke and restoring normalcy.

Port officials confirmed that the situation is now under control, with no casualties reported.

The incident highlights the risks associated with thermal coal handling and underscores the importance of rapid emergency response at one of India’s busiest ports.
