SIR Crucial for Electoral Integrity, Says Odisha Law Minister
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan has strongly endorsed the implementation of the State Integrated Register (SIR), calling it essential for strengthening democratic values and ensuring accurate voter tracking.
Speaking to media, Harichandan emphasized that SIR will help monitor both voters and non-voters, allowing authorities to understand why some citizens abstain from voting. “Political opposition may exist, but the need for SIR is undeniable,” he stated.
The minister argued that SIR will aid in creating precise voter lists, preventing false claims and enabling better electoral planning. “This will lead to a more informed and participatory democracy,” he added.
On jail security, Harichandan acknowledged recent disturbances in correctional facilities and confirmed that 3–4 incidents had occurred. He assured that the government is taking strong measures to prevent future disruptions, with direct instructions issued by the Chief Minister to the jail department.
“The administration is committed to restoring order and ensuring safety within jails,” Harichandan said, adding that steps are being taken to eliminate systemic disorder.
