Shreemayee Mishra Suspended from BJD Amid Internal Turmoil

Bhubaneswar, Sept 23 — In a decisive move to curb internal dissent, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has suspended three senior members—Shreemayee Mishra, General Secretary for Women Affairs, Subas Chandra Sai, and Prabir Chandra Sai—for alleged anti-party activities. The suspension is effective immediately.

The action was confirmed through an official order issued by BJD Vice President Pratap Jena. Party insiders suggest the decision stems from behaviour deemed detrimental to the party’s interests, including public criticism and social media posts indirectly targeting leadership.

Mishra, who had previously drawn attention for her metaphorical references to “Dhritarashtra” in social media posts, responded defiantly. She claimed her party membership had lapsed over a year ago, rendering the suspension “laughable.” “If a party suspends someone who is no longer a member, the world will only laugh,” she said.

She further asserted her commitment to dignity and Odia identity, stating, “Odisha has long been ruled under the influence of a non-Odia. Disrespecting an Odia woman’s honour is unacceptable.”

This development follows the recent suspension of senior leader Prafulla Mallik, who had questioned the party’s post-election strategy. The BJD’s latest disciplinary actions signal a tightening of internal control as it prepares for future political challenges.
