Severe heatwave grips Odisha: Bhubaneswar records 45.4°C, Balasore at 46°C

Bhubaneswar (Orissa Today), April 30: As temperatures soar to unprecedented heights, Bhubaneswar witnessed its mercury levels surpassing 45°C for the first time this season on Tuesday. By 2:30 pm, the city had recorded a scorching 45.4°C, while Balasore emerged as the hottest spot, registering a sweltering 46°C, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In addition to the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the national weather forecaster has issued red warnings, signaling a heatwave to severe heatwave, for several districts including Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sonepur, and Boudh.

Orange warnings of heatwave have also been issued for districts such as Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, and Rayagada. Additionally, a yellow warning for hot and humid weather conditions has been issued for Koraput and Puri.

Moreover, light rain or thundershowers are forecasted to occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir, Khurda, Nayagarh, Nuapada, and Puri until 8:30 am on Wednesday.

The weather agency predicts that the extreme heatwave will persist in the state until May 4th. Red warnings are in place for the next two days, followed by orange and yellow warnings over the subsequent two days. Citizens are strongly advised to take precautionary measures, especially during peak hours between 11 am and 3 pm, when temperatures are most intense.
