Bhubaneswar, June 14, (OT Webdesk) – In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a scientist from Bhubaneswar was duped into transferring Rs 1.6 crore after scammers falsely linked him to underworld figures and drug trafficking operations.

The fraudsters, posing as law enforcement officials, claimed that the scientist’s identity was misused for illegal activities and threatened him with digital arrest unless he complied.

Believing the claims to be legitimate, the victim unknowingly provided sensitive financial details, leading to a substantial monetary loss.

Authorities swiftly acted on the case, with Crime Branch officials tracing the perpetrators.

Two suspects were arrested in Gujarat, adding to previous arrests made in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Cybersecurity experts have reiterated the importance of public awareness and caution against such sophisticated scams.

Police urge individuals to verify any legal threats before taking financial action and report suspicious calls to cybercrime authorities.
