Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: A woman from Sambalpur, who was battling a life-threatening liver disease, has passed away despite undergoing a liver transplant, in which her elder sister-in-law selflessly donated a part of her liver to save her life.
The deceased, Umakanti Pradhan, and her donor, Pratima Pradhan, were both residents of Jankarpali village in the Jujumura block of Sambalpur district. In a remarkable act of familial love, Pratima stepped forward to donate a portion of her liver, giving Umakanti a chance at survival.
According to reports, the liver transplant took place on January 24 at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, and doctors initially confirmed that the surgery was successful. However, in the weeks following the procedure, Umakanti developed severe infections, which ultimately led to multiple organ failure. Despite receiving intensive medical care for 28 days, she succumbed to complications while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Her family is now on their way home to perform her last rites. The tragic incident has left the village and family members in deep grief, highlighting both the sacrificial love of Pratima and the devastating unpredictability of critical medical procedures.
