Sambalpur Court Delivers Swift Conviction in Temple Idol Theft Case

In a landmark demonstration of India’s newly implemented criminal laws, the Sambalpur SDJM Court convicted Rajanikant Bhainsal, alias Monu, in a temple idol theft case within just 28 days.

The case stemmed from the theft of a brass Ganesh idol weighing around 2 kg from the Somnath Baba Temple in Balibandh. The complaint was lodged on February 17, 2026.

Acting swiftly, Sambalpur police arrested the accused on February 20 and recovered the stolen idol. By February 27, the chargesheet was filed, paving the way for a speedy trial.

On March 16, the court sentenced Bhainsal to two years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 under sections 331(3) and 305(D) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The conviction has been hailed as a milestone in ensuring timely justice.

State DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania commended Sambalpur SP and the investigating officers for their efficiency, noting that the case reflects the effectiveness of India’s new legal framework in delivering justice with speed and certainty.
