Rourkela Steel Plant Expansion to Begin in 2026 | Boosting Odisha’s Steel Industry

Rourkela: In a major push to India’s steel sector, Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy has announced that the expansion of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) will commence in 2026 and is expected to be completed within four years.

During his two-day visit to Rourkela, the minister inaugurated several new facilities, including Caster 4, the Pellet Plant, Coke Oven Plant, Plate Mill, and the Hot Strip Mill.

These additions are set to enhance production capacity and efficiency, strengthening RSP’s role in India’s industrial landscape.

Kumaraswamy also held discussions with plant officials and labour unions, focusing on operational challenges and community welfare.

He emphasised that the expansion project will prioritise peace and order, while addressing the displacement concerns of affected communities.

Before returning to Delhi, the minister confirmed plans to meet Odisha Chief Minister in Bhubaneswar to deliberate on the project’s scope and ensure smooth implementation.

The visit was attended by Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Raghunath Pali MLA Durga Charan Tanti, SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash, and RSP Director-in-Charge Alok Verma.

The expansion is expected to significantly contribute to Odisha’s economic growth and reinforce RSP’s position as a cornerstone of India’s steel industry.
