Retired Assistant BEO Sentenced to Four Years in Bribery Case
Cuttack, Odisha: In a landmark judgment reinforcing the state’s anti-corruption drive, the Hon’ble Special Judge, Vigilance, in Cuttack has convicted Ramakanta Sethy, a retired Assistant Block Education Officer (BEO) from Jajpur, Odisha.
Sethy was found guilty under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The case stemmed from allegations that he demanded and accepted a bribe from a school teacher in exchange for regularising the teacher’s period of absence.
Following the trial, Sethy was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine. He was immediately taken into custody to serve his sentence.
In addition, the Odisha Vigilance has announced plans to approach the competent authority to stop Sethy’s pension, citing his conviction as grounds for the move.
This conviction is being hailed as a significant victory for anti-corruption efforts in the education sector, sending a strong message against the misuse of authority by public officials.
