Rayagada infant rescued after alleged sale by parents for Rs 20,000

Bhubaneswar, (Orissa today), Nov 20: A nine-day-old girl, allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 in Rayagada district, was recovered from Andhra Pradesh today. The infant, born on November 3, was reportedly handed over to a childless couple just nine days later. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) intervened and successfully rescued the baby from Andhra Pradesh today.
Rahul Dhanabadi and his wife Kumud Ganta, residents of Nuapada slum under Chandili police station limits, are accused of selling their daughter to a couple from Pedapenki village in Andhra Pradesh’s Manyam district, reportedly driven by severe poverty. After the case surfaced, both the CWC and the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department launched an investigation into the matter.
The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, however, denied the allegations of a child sale, claiming that the parents had handed over the newborn for adoption. Satyapriya Pradhan, a member of the Rights Commission, clarified that the parents, unable to afford the child’s upbringing, gave her to another family due to financial hardship.
