Rayagada Couple Falls Victim to Cyber Scam via Fake RTO App, Loses Rs1.92 Lakh
Rayagada, Odisha — In a disturbing case of cyber fraud, a couple from Uparkodinga village under Tikiri police limits in Kashipur block lost Rs 1.92 lakh after unknowingly installing a fake mobile application named “RTO Challan.”
Raju Sahu and his wife Sunemi Sahu downloaded the app via an APK link sent to their phone.
Within 30 minutes of installation, seven unauthorised transactions were made from their ICICI Bank savings account. Shockingly, no OTPs or confirmation calls were received, indicating a remote breach of their banking credentials.
Upon contacting the bank, the couple was informed that the app had likely harvested sensitive data. They promptly filed a complaint with the Rayagada District Cyber Cell and had earlier approached the Koraput police.
The incident highlights the growing threat of APK-based scams and the urgent need for public awareness around downloading apps from unverified sources. The couple is now urging authorities to take swift action and educate citizens about such deceptive tactics.
