Rampage by ‘Raider’ Elephant: Two Dead in Keonjhar, One Man’s Daring Escape
Keonjhar, (OT Webdesk): A wild elephant locally dubbed “Raider” unleashed terror in the Champua forest region of Keonjhar district, leaving two villagers dead and one man narrowly escaping with his life.
The incident occurred late Friday night when the tusker entered a settlement near the forest edge.
Eyewitnesses say the elephant charged into huts, trampling two individuals who were caught off guard. The deceased have been identified as residents of Balibandha village.
One survivor, 42-year-old Ramesh Mahanta, recounted his escape: “I saw it coming and ran toward the riverbed. I don’t know how I survived.” Forest officials confirmed that “Raider” has been involved in previous incidents and is known for aggressive behaviour.
Local authorities have launched a search operation to track and relocate the elephant. Meanwhile, villagers are demanding stronger intervention and compensation for the victims’ families.
Forest Ranger S.K. Behera stated, “We’re coordinating with wildlife experts to ensure public safety and manage the elephant’s movement.”
This marks the third fatal elephant encounter in Keonjhar this month, raising concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region.
