Rajinikanth’s Coolie vs Hrithik-Jr. NTR’s War 2: Independence Day Box Office Clash Sparks Mixed Reactions

(OT Webdesk)The Independence Day weekend has kicked off with a cinematic showdown as Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, and War 2, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, hit theatres on August 14.

The clash has ignited massive buzz across India, with both films drawing strong advance bookings and polarised reviews.

Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, leads the race with Rs100+ crore in global advance sales, fueled by Rajinikanth’s 50th year in cinema and dominance in Tamil-speaking regions.

While fans celebrate the superstar’s magnetic screen presence, critics point to a weak storyline and a predictable second half. Cameos by Aamir Khan and Nagarjuna Akkineni add flair, but the film’s success hinges heavily on Rajinikanth’s aura.

Meanwhile, War 2, helmed by Ayan Mukerji and part of the YRF Spy Universe, has crossed Rs 30 crore in advance bookings.

The film’s Hindi-Telugu appeal, bolstered by Jr. NTR’s inclusion, has drawn praise for its high-octane first half. However, the second half has been criticised for its recycled plot and sluggish pacing.

Together, the films have generated over Rs 80 crore in advance bookings, signalling a blockbuster weekend. While Coolie enjoys an early lead, the final verdict will depend on audience retention and word-of-mouth.

Regardless of the winner, this clash underscores the growing appetite for pan-Indian spectacles and the evolving dynamics of the country’s box office landscape.
