Rajgangpur College Student Survives Self-Immolation Attempt, Community Calls for Awareness

Rajgangpur – A shocking incident unfolded in the Lanjiberna area of Rajgangpur block when a minor college student attempted self-immolation following a dispute with a local youth.

The girl, a student of Sarbati College, reportedly poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze on Friday evening.

Her mother acted swiftly to extinguish the flames and sought immediate help from neighbours.

The injured student was rushed to the Kalimela health centre, but due to the absence of a burn unit, she was later shifted to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). Doctors confirmed that she sustained serious burn injuries and remains under close monitoring.

Police reached the scene soon after receiving information and have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Preliminary statements have been recorded, and officers are examining possible causes.

Community members expressed deep concern, emphasising the urgent need for awareness campaigns and stronger support systems for young students facing emotional distress.

The incident has sparked conversations about mental health, youth counselling, and preventive measures in educational institutions across the region.
