Raj Bhavan Leads by Example with Solar Power and Electric Vehicles

Odisha renewable energy initiatives

Bhubaneswar ( OT Webdesk): In a decisive move toward environmental sustainability, Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati has called upon citizens to embrace renewable energy and make the shift to green alternatives, reducing pollution and curbing dependence on fossil fuels.

Speaking at a press conference at Raj Bhavan, he underscored the urgency of transitioning to clean energy, citing both economic and environmental benefits.

Since assuming office, Governor Kambhampati has led transformative changes within the Raj Bhavan premises, installing a 150-kilowatt solar power plant, with plans for an additional 400 kilowatts to be operational soon.

This initiative aims to make Raj Bhavan a net-zero energy campus, demonstrating leadership in sustainable governance.

As part of this green initiative, a fleet of electric vehicles, including official cars and two-wheelers, has been introduced at Raj Bhavan. “Every ride now contributes to a quieter, cleaner, and more responsible tomorrow. It’s more than a choice—it’s the path we’ve chosen to follow,” remarked Dr. Kambhampati.

### *Government-backed Renewable Energy Schemes*

The Governor also highlighted several significant government initiatives designed to accelerate the adoption of green energy:

– *PM-KUSUM Yojana:* Helps farmers install solar-powered pumps for irrigation, reducing reliance on conventional fuels.
– *PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana:* Provides financial assistance for household solar installations, with combined subsidies from the central and Odisha state government reaching up to ₹1,38,000 for a 3-kilowatt system.

Appreciating the Odisha government’s proactive approach, Governor Kambhampati noted that additional state subsidies under the PM Surya Ghar scheme would encourage more households to switch to solar energy.

He urged citizens to leverage these incentives and transition toward renewable sources, not just for personal savings but for long-term environmental sustainability.

Advancing Green Mobility

A strong advocate for electric vehicles, Dr. Kambhampati stressed the need to phase out petrol and diesel-powered vehicles in favour of EVS. “Charging electric vehicles with rooftop solar panels enables truly green mobility while making everyday travel significantly more affordable,” he stated.

Echoing his previous advocacy for energy independence during his tenure as an MP in 2014, Dr. Kambhampati emphasised the economic and environmental benefits of reducing crude oil imports, promoting ethanol-blended fuels, and encouraging tax incentives for electric mobility.

Media’s Role in Driving Awareness

Governor Kambhampati also urged the media to actively promote awareness about renewable energy adoption. “The objective of today’s interaction is to inspire citizens through awareness. The media serves as a crucial bridge in taking this vital message to every household,” he emphasised.

Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo commended Raj Bhavan’s green initiatives and highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts in advancing sustainable energy practices.

Energy Department Principal Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev elaborated on the government’s subsidy structures and the roadmap for further adoption of renewable energy across Odisha.

With strong leadership at the helm and structured incentives in place, Odisha is steadily paving the way toward a more sustainable, eco-friendly future.
