PURI STAMPEDE PROBE: AUTHORITIES CALL FOR PUBLIC EVIDENCE AND TRANSPARENCY

Bhubaneswar, July 8, (OT webdesk): In the wake of the tragic stampede that claimed three lives during this year’s Rath Yatra in Puri, the Government of Odisha has launched a high-level probe to investigate the incident and bolster safety protocols for future festivals.

The Home Department has entrusted the inquiry to Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg.

The stampede, which occurred near Gundicha Temple on June 29, raised pressing concerns about crowd management during large-scale religious events.

In a bid for transparency, officials have appealed to the public for cooperation. Eyewitnesses and attendees are encouraged to submit relevant evidence—such as videos, photos, or accounts—by July 20.

Submissions can be delivered in person at Lok Seva Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, or via email at puritragedy.enquiry@odisha.gov.in.

To ensure inclusive public engagement, two hearings have been scheduled:

  • July 9, 2025: State Guest House, Bhubaneswar (3 PM)
  • July 10, 2025: Special Circuit House, Puri (3 PM)

For additional details, citizens may contact the Development Commissioner’s Office at (0674) 2536882 / 2391970.

Authorities stress the importance of public input in identifying possible lapses and implementing robust crowd control strategies.

The outcome of this probe is expected to significantly inform policy changes for festival management across Odisha.
