Public Anger Erupts After Seven Days of Protest Over Thakurani Iron Ore Mine Issues

Barbil, Odisha – August 30, 2025

For the past seven days, residents of Barbil Municipality have staged a continuous sit-in protest demanding urgent action on five critical issues linked to the Thakurani iron ore mine operated by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS). The protest, fueled by frustration over administrative silence and alleged corporate negligence, has drawn widespread support from local citizens and leaders.

On August 24, a formal memorandum signed by 32 individuals was submitted to the Keonjhar District Collector. The demands include:
– Release of trucks seized by the mining department in Joda,
– Repair of severely damaged roads due to excessive ore transportation,
– Provision of drinking water and healthcare in mining-affected villages,
– Employment opportunities for local youth,
– Resources for sports development in the region.

Protesters allege that due to AMNS’s operational lapses, several trucks were impounded, causing significant financial distress to truck owners. Despite repeated appeals, company officials have reportedly failed to take concrete steps to resolve the issue. Residents also claim that iron ore is being transported through unpaved routes, worsening road conditions and endangering public safety.

Basic amenities remain absent in the affected villages. Locals report a lack of clean drinking water and healthcare facilities, even after years of mining activity. Unemployment among youth continues to rise, with no visible efforts from the company to offer jobs or vocational support. Additionally, the community accuses AMNS of ignoring sports development, stating that no equipment or initiatives have been provided to encourage local talent.

While AMNS officials have attempted dialogue, no resolution has emerged. Mines Manager Indrajit Sah stated, “No demands have been received from the protesters or the administration,” a claim that has further inflamed public sentiment.

Biju Janata Dal leader Hemant Sahay questioned the rationale behind halting transportation for hundreds of truck owners due to the seizure of just two vehicles. He highlighted the growing financial pressure on families, citing loan repayments, school fees, and upcoming festival expenses.

As public anger intensifies and administrative silence persists, the protest has taken on a more serious tone. The community now awaits decisive action from both the company and the district administration to address their grievances and restore trust.
