Prafulla Samal’s Sons Join BJP: Major Blow to BJD in Odisha Politics

In a dramatic political development in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has suffered a significant setback as two sons of senior leader Prafulla Samal—Prayaskanti Samal and Pranitkanti Samal—formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The induction ceremony, held in the presence of BJP state president Manmohan Samal, also witnessed the defection of 30 sarpanchs and 35 samiti members. This mass shift is being seen as a strategic boost to the BJP’s grassroots presence across key districts.

For the BJD, which has long relied on its rural network for electoral strength, the departure of influential local leaders marks a symbolic blow ahead of upcoming political battles.

Party insiders described the event as a turning point that could reshape Odisha’s political landscape.

Welcoming the new members, BJP leaders emphasised that their entry would energise the organisation and expand its influence in rural constituencies.

With elections looming, this development is expected to intensify the contest between the two major parties in the state.
