PM Modi Pays Tribute to Odisha’s Freedom Fighter Parbati Giri Ahead of Birth Centenary
As India prepares to celebrate its 77th Republic Day next month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on the nation to remember the sacrifices of unsung heroes of the independence struggle.
In his latest Mann Ki Baat address, the Prime Minister paid heartfelt tribute to Parbati Giri, a valiant freedom fighter from Odisha, whose birth centenary will be marked in January 2026.
Parbati Giri, often hailed as the “Mother Teresa of Western Odisha,” joined the Quit India Movement at the age of 16, displaying extraordinary courage and commitment to the cause of freedom.
Despite her pivotal role, her contributions—like those of many women freedom fighters—remained underappreciated for decades.
After independence, Giri dedicated her life to social service and tribal welfare, establishing orphanages and working tirelessly to uplift marginalised communities.
Modi highlighted her legacy as a guiding light for future generations, noting that her life exemplifies selfless service and patriotism.
In a symbolic gesture, the Prime Minister expressed his tribute in Odia: “ମୂଁ ପାର୍ବତୀ ଗିରି ଜିଙ୍କୁ ଶ୍ରଦ୍ଧାଞ୍ଜଳି ଅର୍ପଣ କରୁଛି” (“I pay my tribute to Parbati Giri”). He urged citizens to pass on these stories to younger generations, ensuring that the sagas of India’s independence heroes are never forgotten.
With her centenary approaching, renewed interest in commemorating Parbati Giri’s contributions is expected, potentially through events and tributes that inspire young Indians to embrace patriotism and social responsibility.
