Pala Baigana Brinjal: Odisha’s Heritage Crop Seeks GI Tag

Pala Baigana Brinjal

Bhubaneswar (Orissa Today): For nearly 500 years, the fertile banks of the Brahmani River in Dhenkanal, Odisha, have nurtured a rare treasure—the Pala Baigana brinjal. Now, a group of determined farmers is striving to protect this prized crop by securing a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Distinct for its sweet flavour, impressive size, and traditional cultivation methods, Pala Baigana is sold in local markets at a premium, reflecting its status as a regional delicacy. Local farmer Natabar Mallik proudly shares, “This brinjal is part of our legacy. Each one weighs between 500 and 700 grams, and its taste is unmatched.”

Historians and agricultural scientists are rallying behind the movement, emphasising the cultural and ecological importance of preserving indigenous varieties like Pala Baigana. Achieving a GI tag could bolster global recognition and provide much-needed support for sustainable farming practices in the area.
