Padma Shri Utsav Charan Das, Legendary Ghoda Nacha Exponent, Passes Away at 80
Cuttack, Odisha – Padma Shri awardee and celebrated Ghoda Nacha exponent Utsav Charan Das passed away at the age of 80 after suffering chest pain.
Known as the “Ghoda Nacha Samrat,” Das dedicated his life to preserving and popularising Odisha’s traditional folk dance both nationally and internationally.
Born in 1945 in Manian village, Cuttack, Das overcame hardships to pursue education and immerse himself in the arts.
He founded Sangeet Kala Sansad in 1964, became an Akashvani artist in 1965, and secured official recognition for Ghoda Nacha in 1971.
From 1980 onward, he choreographed his own works, ensuring the art form’s survival and growth.
His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1997–98), an honorary doctorate from Utkal University of Culture (2015), and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2020.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and cultural enthusiasts.
