Padma Shri 2026: Odisha’s Cultural Icons Shine on National Stage
Three eminent personalities from Odisha have been selected to receive the prestigious Padma Shri Award 2026, bringing recognition to the state’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage.
Charan Hembram, a celebrated Santhali author and cultural activist, has been honoured in the Literature and Education category under the “unsung heroes” initiative.
Known for his extensive work in preserving tribal oral traditions, Hembram has authored numerous books, plays, and songs in Santhali.
His efforts to empower women through indigenous dance forms and establish institutions for tribal cultural education have left a lasting impact.
He previously won the Sahitya Akademi Award (2019) for his anthology Sisirjali.
Joining him is Mahendra Kumar Mishra, an eminent linguist and folklorist, recognised for his pioneering documentation of tribal myths, epics, and oral traditions.
His scholarship has been instrumental in safeguarding indigenous knowledge systems for future generations.
The third awardee, Simanchal Patro, a noted “Sakhi Nata” theatre artist, has been honoured for his lifelong dedication to folk theatre and performing arts.
His work has helped sustain Odisha’s traditional theatre forms and inspire younger generations of performers.
The recognition of these three stalwarts underscores Odisha’s contribution to India’s cultural diversity and highlights the importance of preserving indigenous art, language, and traditions.
