Bhubaneswar, June 19(OT Webdesk): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an Orange Alert for four key districts in Odisha—Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur—as heavy rainfall ranging from 12–20 cm is expected in isolated pockets due to intensified monsoon activity.
Simultaneously, a Yellow Warning is in effect for Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, and Bargarh, where moderate to heavy showers are anticipated.
These developments stem from active low-pressure systems brewing over eastern and western Odisha.
Meteorologists from the Bhubaneswar Regional Centre reported a sharp turnaround in rainfall trends across the state.
Between June 15 and June 18, Odisha saw a 29% surge in monsoon coverage, overcoming a previous 42% rainfall deficit.
The uptick is attributed to cyclonic circulation dynamics and the rapid revival of the southwest monsoon.
Two additional low-pressure formations—one over Gangetic West Bengal and the other over southern Gujarat—are expected to enhance precipitation across Odisha in the coming days.
In response, the IMD has urged residents, especially those in vulnerable zones, to remain cautious.
District administrations have activated disaster response teams and are monitoring flood-prone and landslide-susceptible regions closely.
