Odisha’s First Brain Aneurysm Surgery via Hand Artery Performed at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar has successfully conducted the first brain aneurysm endovascular surgery in Odisha, utilising the hand artery—a minimally invasive technique traditionally used in cardiac procedures. This significant intervention represents a major advancement in neuro-interventional care in the region.

The patient, a 40-year-old working professional from Sambalpur with a history of hypertension, arrived at the hospital experiencing severe headaches, dizziness, and a sudden blackout. After being promptly admitted to the Emergency Department, a CT scan revealed a substantial brain haemorrhage. Subsequent brain angiography confirmed a ruptured aneurysm, which is an abnormal swelling of a blood vessel in the brain. Given the life-threatening nature of the condition, the patient and their family were advised to proceed with urgent endovascular surgery.

The neuro-intervention team, led by Dr. T. Seetam Kumar, Consultant in Neuro and Vascular Interventional Radiology, opted for the innovative approach of accessing the aneurysm through the hand artery, marking the first such procedure in Odisha. Remarkably, the patient was able to walk comfortably the next day and is currently under close monitoring.

Dr. T. Seetam Kumar commented on the case, stating, “A ruptured brain aneurysm is a critical emergency associated with a high risk of mortality and disability. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial. By performing the endovascular surgery through the hand artery, we ensured precision while enhancing patient comfort and recovery. This marks a significant advancement in neuro-intervention in Odisha.”

The success of this procedure was due to the multidisciplinary expertise and coordination among the hospital’s clinical teams. Key contributions came from Dr. Amit Jaiswal, Senior Consultant and Director of the Department of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Saurabh Sharma, Consultant in Neuro Anaesthesia, along with the skilled teams from the Cath Lab and Neuro ICU.

This milestone reflects Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar’s unwavering commitment to providing cutting-edge neuro-interventional treatments. By pioneering such advanced techniques, the hospital remains at the forefront of delivering timely, effective, and patient-centered care for critical neurological emergencies in Odisha and beyond.
