Odisha’s Crocodile Population Sees Growth, Bird Census Adds New Species

Odisha has reported encouraging results from its latest wildlife census. The crocodile population in the state has risen by 3.54%, bringing the total count to 2,193 individuals.

In Satkosia and Tikarpada, the survey documented 65 adult crocodiles and 22 hatchlings, reflecting successful conservation measures.

Meanwhile, the bird census recorded an impressive 24,90,986 birds across Odisha’s wetlands. Although Chilika Lake did not report rare species this year, two new species were identified there.

Hirakud reservoir added five new bird species, further enriching the state’s avian diversity.

Migratory waterbirds continue to flock to Odisha each winter, with arrivals beginning in November, peaking in January, and returning by mid‑February.

These findings highlight Odisha’s growing importance as a safe haven for both resident and migratory species.
