Odisha’s 61-Day Coastal Fishing Ban: A Leap for Marine Conservation

Odisha fishing ban 2025.

The Odisha government has announced a 61-day fishing ban along its coastline starting April 15, 2025, under the Odisha Marine Fishing Regulation Act (OMFRA).

This annual conservation measure aims to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable fish breeding during the spawning season. The ban restricts mechanized boats and trawlers, known to disrupt ecosystems, while exempting traditional non-mechanized fishing boats under 8.5 meters to support small-scale fishermen.

Major coastal districts, including Ganjam, Kujang, Balasore, and Puri, will see strict enforcement by the Fisheries Department, with penalties for violations. The move impacts nearly 700 trawlers in Paradip, directly affecting around 5,000 fishermen.

This step underscores Odisha’s commitment to balancing ecological preservation with community welfare.
