Odisha Unveils Plan for 800 Cyclone Shelters Near Schools
(OT Webdesk)In a bold move to strengthen disaster preparedness, Odisha’s Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari has announced the construction of approximately 800 cyclone shelters across the state’s vulnerable regions.
The initiative, unveiled during his recent meeting with the Union Home Minister in Delhi, aims to enhance both emergency response and community resilience.
Strategically located near schools, the shelters are designed to serve dual purposes: acting as safe havens during cyclones and other natural calamities, and functioning as community hubs during normal times. This approach ensures the infrastructure remains active, well-maintained, and integrated into daily civic life.
“These shelters will not only protect lives during disasters but also become hubs of community engagement,” said Minister Pujari, emphasising the importance of keeping the facilities in regular use to prevent neglect.
The project aligns with India’s broader climate adaptation and public safety goals, reflecting Odisha’s proactive stance on disaster management and infrastructure resilience.
