Odisha Unveils Ambitious Tourism Plan: 15 Iconic Destinations, 15 Lakh Jobs by 2036
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced a landmark tourism expansion initiative under its long-term vision, Viksit Odisha 2036.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed that the state will develop 15 iconic tourism destinations aimed at generating nearly 15 lakh livelihood opportunities over the next decade.
Speaking at the inauguration of the seventh Konark Eco Retreat along the Puri–Konark marine drive, Majhi emphasised tourism’s role as a pillar of economic growth and employment creation.
The roadmap focuses on integrated, high-capacity destinations that highlight Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, traditional art forms, and local cuisine, while ensuring sustainable development.
Eco-retreats such as Satkosia, Bhitarkanika, Daringbadi, Sonapur, and Konark have already demonstrated success by boosting local economies, creating jobs, and promoting environmental awareness.
The Chief Minister noted that similar models will be replicated across the state, with plans to even host cabinet meetings at select eco-retreat sites to further promote sustainable tourism.
The Konark Eco Retreat 2025, set up near the Kushabhadra river, will operate for 90 days, offering luxury tents, curated experiences, beach activities, yoga sessions, water sports, and cultural performances.
A spectacular drone show marked the inauguration, signalling the start of Odisha’s tourism season.
With this initiative, Odisha aims to position itself as a leading eco-cultural tourism hub in Asia, blending sustainability with large-scale economic impact.
