Odisha to Suspend Rice Distribution for Non-e-KYC Ration Card Holders

Bhubaneswar, Oct 14: Starting next month, the Odisha government will halt subsidised rice distribution to ration card holders who fail to complete their mandatory e-KYC verification.

The move, announced by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra, aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Currently, over 15.67 lakh beneficiaries across the state remain unverified. While rice distribution continues for now, the government has made it clear that no exemptions will be granted—even to police personnel or officials. The decision follows a directive from the central government to discontinue benefits linked to incomplete e-KYC.

Minister Patra emphasised that the policy is not intended to harass citizens but to ensure that welfare benefits reach the rightful recipients. To support the transition, the department has launched awareness campaigns and set up help desks to assist with the e-KYC process.

In cases of genuine hardship, affected individuals may submit written appeals, which will be reviewed individually. If the central government extends its deadline, Odisha may follow suit.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to eliminate duplication, prevent misuse, and streamline welfare delivery across the state.
