Odisha to launch mass drug administration drive to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 (UNI) The Odisha government is set to launch a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign across selected blocks in 12 districts to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) from the state.

As part of the initiative, an exclusive awareness drive was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Health & Family Welfare and the ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backwards Classes Welfare Department.

The campaign reached 47 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS).

More than 5,600 students, principals, and teachers were sensitised on Lymphatic Filariasis, including its modes of transmission, prevention methods, and the critical importance of drug compliance under the MDA initiative.

Students were encouraged to take the anti-filarial medication at designated MDA booths set up in schools by the Health Department.

They were also urged to spread awareness about the disease and the campaign within their communities.

Dr Prabhakar Sahoo, Additional Director and Nodal Officer for Vector-Borne Diseases, appealed to all participants to take the anti-filarial drugs themselves and ensure every family member does the same during the campaign period.

He stressed that the campaign’s success hinges on collective participation and cooperation, which can help the state achieve its goal of becoming filariasis-free.

“This comprehensive awareness drive marks a significant step towards eradicating filariasis from Odisha through informed action and community involvement,” Dr. Sahoo stated.
