Odisha Swelters as Mercury Crosses 40°C, IMD Predicts Relief Ahead
Odisha is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 40°C in Jharsuguda, Titlagarh, and Sambalpur. Jharsuguda recorded the state’s highest at 40.2°C, while 13 cities reported 37°C or above.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the scorching conditions will persist until March 26, particularly in western and interior districts.
However, a drop of 3–5°C is expected from March 15 onward, bringing partial relief.
Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–50 kmph) are likely until March 18.
An orange warning has been issued for Rayagada, Mayurbhanj, and Kendujhar, while yellow warnings cover districts including Anugul, Kalahandi, Balasore, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam.
Authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid peak sun exposure, and take precautions against heat‑related illnesses. Odisha now braces for a transition from extreme heat to pre‑monsoon activity.
