Odisha Secures 762 PM SHRI Schools, Launches Drive for Inclusive Education
Odisha has taken a major leap in strengthening its education system with the approval of 762 PM SHRI schools across the state.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond announced in the Assembly that prior to 2024, Odisha had no PM SHRI institutions.
Following persistent efforts by the new administration, the Centre initially sanctioned 462 schools, later expanding the number to 762 after discussions with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
In a parallel move toward inclusivity, the government has initiated the recruitment of 1,500 special educators to support differently‑abled students.
These appointments aim to ensure modern, accessible learning environments across schools.
The state has also reopened 46 schools previously shut due to low enrollment, with plans to revive four more. Communities can request reopening through district committees.
To tackle dropout rates, Odisha has rolled out child tracking surveys, the “Asa School Jiba” campaign, village‑level enrollment drives, and awareness programs like “Pravesh Utsav.” These measures have already re‑enrolled 60,729 students statewide, including 300 of 329 identified dropouts in Balasore district.
Additionally, incentives such as free uniforms, bicycles, and extended mid‑day meals under the CM Poshan Yojana (covering Classes 9 and 10) are benefiting over 10.8 lakh students.
These reforms highlight the government’s commitment to inclusive, accessible, and quality education, aiming for 100% enrollment and reduced dropout rates across Odisha.
