Odisha School Accident: Class 1 Student Dies After Cement Board Collapse in Mayurbhanj

Mayurbhanj, Odisha: A shocking incident at Bada Bhundu Upper Primary School in Tiring block of Mayurbhanj district claimed the life of a seven-year-old Class 1 student on Friday afternoon.

According to reports, a cement information board installed inside the school premises suddenly collapsed while children were playing nearby.

Three students were trapped under the heavy structure. Teachers and fellow students rushed to rescue them, but one child, Abhir Lohar, son of Shib Charan Lohar of Bada Bhundu village, sustained critical injuries. He was immediately taken to the Tiring Community Health Centre, where doctors declared him dead.

The other two students suffered minor injuries and are recovering.

Police from Tiring station registered a case of unnatural death (Case No. 22/2025) and sent the body for post-mortem at Rairangpur hospital.

Preliminary findings suggest the board was of poor construction quality, raising serious concerns about safety standards in school infrastructure projects.

Local residents have demanded accountability, alleging that the cement board was built with substandard materials during a development project. Authorities are investigating the matter further.

This tragic incident has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the urgent need for strict monitoring of school infrastructure to ensure student safety.
