Odisha Reports Over 37,000 Cases of Violence Against Women in 14 Months, Sparking Urgent Calls for Reform

In a startling revelation, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi disclosed that the state recorded over 37,000 cases of violence against women in just 14 months.

The data, presented in response to a question by MLA Arun Sahoo in the Assembly, has ignited widespread concern among lawmakers and civil society organisations.

The breakdown of the cases includes:

  • 9,181 incidents of indecent behaviour
  • 2,933 rape cases
  • 1,278 sexual harassment complaints
  • 5,464 dowry-related torture reports

These figures underscore a deep-rooted crisis in gender safety and justice across the state.

In a separate disclosure, the Chief Minister reported that 22 students died by suicide in government and private educational institutions over the past 15 months.

Among the victims were four students from Rayagada and two female students from KIIT University, highlighting a growing mental health emergency among youth.

The revelations have prompted urgent calls for:

  • Strengthened law enforcement
  • Comprehensive mental health support systems
  • Gender sensitisation programs in schools and colleges

As Odisha grapples with these dual crises, activists and policymakers are urging swift, systemic reforms to protect vulnerable populations and foster a safer, more inclusive society.
