Odisha Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Flood Risk Till August 25
(OT Webdesk)The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across multiple districts until August 25.
A developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify, triggering widespread showers and potential disruptions.
On August 21, seven districts—including Balasore, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar—were placed under a yellow warning for thunderstorms and wind speeds reaching 30–40 kmph.
The alert was expanded on August 22 to cover 18 districts, including Cuttack, Khordha, and Puri, with expectations of lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph.
Southern Odisha has already witnessed the impact, with districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur reporting landslides, submerged roads, and uprooted trees. Local authorities have initiated relief and clearance operations to restore connectivity and ensure public safety.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and hilly areas, as the risk of flooding, waterlogging, and landslides remains high. Traffic disruptions and infrastructure strain are likely in the coming days.
