Odisha Police has intensified its war against narcotics smuggling through railway routes, seizing over 3,352 kilograms of ganja and arresting 299 accused in 2025.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) registered 200 NDPS cases across the state, with major operations carried out in Cuttack and Rourkela.
GRP Cuttack alone registered 87 cases, confiscating 1,489 kg of ganja and arresting 116 individuals, while GRP Rourkela booked 113 cases, seizing 1,863 kg and arresting 183 accused.
Police also recovered small quantities of brown sugar during the raids.
Investigations revealed that most smugglers hailed from Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, pointing to a wider interstate network.
To keep railway routes free from narcotics, the GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) have stepped up joint operations at major stations, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Puri, and Rourkela.
Suspicious parcels are being thoroughly checked, with sniffer dogs deployed across stations and train coaches.
Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania reiterated Odisha Police’s zero‑tolerance policy against drug mafias, urging citizens to cooperate and report suspicious activities to authorities.
