Odisha Plans to Double Monthly Rice Allocation for Ration Card Holders
Bhubaneswar, Oct 15, 2025 — In a major push to bolster food security across Odisha, the state government is considering a proposal to double the monthly rice allocation for ration card holders from 5 kg to 10 kg.
The initiative, announced by Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra, aims to address rising nutritional needs amid escalating living costs.
Currently, beneficiaries receive 5 kg of rice per person under central schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
However, Patra emphasised that this amount often falls short for low-income households. “We are contemplating doubling this to 10 kg at the state’s own expense to ensure no family goes hungry,” he stated.
The proposal has been forwarded to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for final approval. If sanctioned, the scheme will benefit all 3.25 crore ration card holders in Odisha, marking a significant expansion in the state’s welfare outreach.
To streamline distribution and prevent misuse, the government has mandated e-KYC for all beneficiaries. Approximately 15.67 lakh individuals who haven’t completed the process risk losing access to their monthly quota starting next month.
Patra assured that Odisha would align with any deadline extensions announced by the Centre, offering a grace period if necessary.
This move, if implemented, could redefine the state’s food security framework and reinforce its commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities
