Odisha Minister Confirms Student Abuse in 17 Universities

In a startling disclosure during the Odisha Assembly session, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj revealed that 19 girl students across 17 universities in the state have been subjected to various forms of abuse. The minister’s written reply to BJD MLA Tusharkanti Behera outlined the disturbing statistics:

  • 6 students were sexually abused
  • 9 students faced mental harassment
  • 2 students experienced inappropriate behaviour

These incidents, spread across multiple institutions, have ignited serious concerns about the safety and well-being of female students in higher education.

Minister Suraj assured the Assembly that appropriate action would be taken wherever necessary and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering safe and inclusive campuses.

The revelations have prompted calls for stronger safeguards, transparent investigations, and institutional accountability to protect students from abuse and harassment.
