Odisha MBBS Student Gang-Raped in Durgapur: Main Accused Still Absconding, Says Balasore MP
A second-year MBBS student from Odisha was gang-raped late Friday night near a private medical college in Shobhapur, Durgapur, West Bengal.
The survivor, who hails from Jaleswar in Balasore district, had reportedly stepped out with a male friend to get food when a group of 4–5 men allegedly followed and attacked them.
The assailants dragged the girl into a forested area and committed the assault before fleeing.
Three suspects have been arrested so far, while two others—including the main accused—remain absconding more than 36 hours after the incident. The West Bengal Police are reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to expedite the investigation.
Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi visited the crime scene and expressed grave concern over West Bengal’s deteriorating law and order. “The state has become a safe haven for terrorists and anti-social elements.
The government seems to be promoting such activities,” he told reporters, demanding swift action against the remaining accused.
The Odisha Women’s Commission and Balasore district authorities have extended support to the survivor’s family, coordinating with West Bengal officials to ensure proper medical and legal assistance.
The brutal assault has sparked widespread outrage across Odisha and West Bengal. Women’s rights groups are calling for stronger campus security and stricter legal measures to prevent such crimes.
