Odisha Mandates Fire Safety Systems in All New Passenger Buses from October 2025

In a decisive move to enhance public transport safety, the Odisha government has mandated fire detection and suppression systems in all passenger buses registered after October 2025.

The directive, issued by the Fire and Emergency Services Department, comes in response to recent fatal bus fire incidents across India, including the tragic Kurnool blaze in Andhra Pradesh that claimed 19 lives.

Under the new rules, every newly registered bus must be equipped with fire alarms, extinguishers, suppression mechanisms, emergency exit doors, glass-breaking hammers, and clearly marked escape routes.

These measures aim to ensure swift evacuation and minimise casualties during emergencies.

To support implementation, the department has released a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlining safety audits, equipment standards, and mandatory training for bus staff.

Weekly awareness campaigns will be conducted at major bus terminals, focusing on emergency response techniques for drivers and conductors—especially those operating long-distance night coaches.

The Commerce and Transport Department, in collaboration with the State Bus Owners’ Association, held a joint meeting to discuss rollout strategies.

Officials emphasised that bus operators must uphold both legal and moral responsibilities for passenger safety. Authorities will monitor compliance and take strict action against violators.

This proactive step positions Odisha as a leader in transport safety reform, aligning its public transport standards with national benchmarks and aiming to prevent future tragedies.
