Odisha Launches Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana with Rs 51,000 Aid Package
The Odisha government has launched the Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana 2025–2030, a landmark initiative designed to empower women and curb regressive marriage practices. The scheme provides a Rs 51,000 assistance package to economically weaker brides across the state.
Under the program:
- Rs 35,000 will be directly transferred to the bride’s bank account.
- Rs 10,000 will be given as a wedding kit (clothes, utensils, and essentials).
- Rs 6,000 will support community-level marriage ceremonies.
The scheme, effective from 2025–26 to 2029–30, expands earlier marriage assistance programs and introduces progressive reforms. Notably, widow remarriage is now included, a move welcomed by women’s rights activists.
Eligibility Criteria
- Brides aged 18–35 years and grooms aged 21–35 years.
- Families from PVTGs, SC/ST communities, widows, persons with disabilities, or those living below the poverty line.
- One-time benefit per family, with strict verification by district-level SUBHADRA committees.
Objectives
The scheme seeks to:
- Eliminate dowry practices.
- Prevent child and forced marriages.
- Ensure every girl from a humble background enjoys a dignified wedding without financial burden.
Applications will open in January 2025, with implementation through the SUBHADRA framework to ensure transparency and last-mile delivery. With this initiative, Odisha strengthens its position as a progressive state committed to social reform and women’s dignity
