Odisha Launches First NDMA-Funded Drought Mitigation Programme
Bhubaneswar: In a landmark move to strengthen climate resilience and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods, the Odisha Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment (DAFE) has rolled out the Odisha Agriculture Drought Mitigation Programme (OADMP).
The initiative, unveiled during Krushi Odisha 2026, is the first-ever drought mitigation programme funded by the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).
With a budget of Rs 141.50 crore, the programme will be implemented in Komna (Nuapada), Kosagumuda (Nabarangpur), and Raruan (Mayurbhanj) blocks, directly benefiting around 24,000 households.
Special emphasis will be placed on smallholder, marginal, tribal, women, and youth farmers, ensuring inclusive growth and resilience.
The OADMP aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote crop diversification, and reduce migration pressures by building sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Technical support will be provided by leading institutions, including ICRISAT, ICAR-CRIDA, and IRRI.
Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo highlighted the importance of proactive drought management and stakeholder convergence, while Additional Chief Secretary Dr Arabinda Kumar Padhee stressed the pillars of science-led planning, convergence, and community ownership.
By pioneering this initiative, Odisha positions itself as a national leader in climate-resilient agriculture, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
