Jajpur, (OT Webdesk) — A rehearsal by the Tulasi Gananatya jatra troupe has sparked controversy after actor Sai Satyajit Panda was seen handling a live African ball python on stage.
The video, which quickly went viral, prompted the Forest Department to launch an investigation into potential violations of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The rehearsal, held in Chandikhole for the play Ei Bodhe Sesha Dekha, featured Panda portraying a forest ranger.
He claimed the python was a legally purchased, non-venomous exotic pet, commonly kept in Bhubaneswar households. “It was used in a private rehearsal, not a public show,” Panda clarified, adding that no wildlife laws were knowingly breached.
Forest officials summoned Panda for questioning. While no FIR has been filed, authorities are examining whether prior clearance is required for using exotic animals in performances.
The case has reignited debate over ethical boundaries in traditional theatre and may set a precedent for regulating exotic pets in public acts.
