Odisha Jail Data 2026: 18,176 Prisoners Lodged, 17 Still Absconding
Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s prison system is grappling with overcrowding and security challenges, as revealed in recent data presented in the Assembly.
The state currently houses 18,176 prisoners across 86 jails, including 4,136 convicts and 14,040 under-trials.
Over the past five years, 44 prisoners managed to escape custody. Of them, 27 have been recaptured, while 17 remain absconding, raising concerns over surveillance and prison management.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed legislators that steps are being taken to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and plug security loopholes.
The government is focusing on improving infrastructure, enhancing vigilance, and ensuring better coordination among prison staff to prevent future incidents.
The figures highlight the dual challenge of managing a swelling inmate population while maintaining strict security protocols.
