Odisha Intensifies Crackdown on Consumer Rights Violations; 153 Cases of Weight Fraud Registered
Odisha has reported a significant rise in consumer rights enforcement, with 10,756 cases registered over the past two years, including 153 linked to weight and measurement fraud.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra presented the figures in the Assembly, highlighting the government’s commitment to safeguarding consumer interests.
Officials conducted 3,12,326 inspections during the period, resulting in fines totalling Rs 3.11 crore, of which Rs 23.51 lakh were specifically for weight-related violations.
The minister emphasised that strict enforcement and regular inspections are crucial to ensuring transparency in the supply chain.
He reassured consumers that Odisha’s markets will operate with integrity, while warning traders that violations will invite legal consequences.
The Assembly discussion further underscored the importance of accountability in trade, urging businesses to uphold ethical standards.
With intensified monitoring, the government aims to strengthen consumer trust and curb unfair practices across the state.
