Odisha Heavy Rainfall Alert: IMD Warns of Widespread Rains Till August 17
(OT Webdesk)The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather warnings for Odisha as a low-pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal within 48 hours.
This development is likely to trigger widespread rainfall across the state until August 17.
Southern districts such as Koraput and Malkangiri are under an orange warning for very heavy rainfall on August 12 and 13. Meanwhile, 28 other districts—including Rayagada, Ganjam, and Kandhamal—are under a yellow warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The remaining 22 districts are also expected to experience rain accompanied by lightning.
In the past 24 hours, Daitari in Keonjhar recorded the highest rainfall at 15.8 cm, followed by Tikabali (9.5 cm) and Jajpur (7.5 cm). Overall, 29 locations across Odisha reported rainfall between 1 and 6 cm.
Since June 1, Odisha has received 653.6 mm of rainfall—5% below the seasonal average. Ten districts are facing a rainfall deficit, while 16 have recorded normal levels.
Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to remain alert for potential flooding. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
