Odisha Govt Rules Out Free Electricity, Promotes Rooftop Solar Scheme
Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, has clarified in the Legislative Assembly that the state has no plans to provide 300 units of free electricity to households.
Instead, the government is prioritising renewable energy through the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Under this scheme, households can generate up to 300 units of electricity per month via rooftop solar installations.
As of March 12, 2026, 46,793 households have already adopted solar plants, supported by subsidies of Rs 261.68 crore from the Centre and Rs 197.31 crore from the state.
The government has set a target to extend this benefit to 3 lakh households by 2026–27, ensuring affordable and sustainable energy access.
The emphasis on solar power reflects Odisha’s commitment to clean energy and reducing dependence on conventional electricity subsidies.
