Odisha Govt Orders Strict SOPs to Tackle Heat Wave Threat

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has directed all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to strictly implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to safeguard citizens against the looming summer heat wave.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra chaired a high-level review meeting, emphasising zero tolerance for sunstroke fatalities.

He instructed WATCO and Public Health engineers to ensure an uninterrupted water supply, while municipal commissioners and executive officers were tasked with setting up public drinking water points, shaded rest areas, and cooling facilities in crowded urban zones.

To strengthen preparedness, all ULBs must operate 24/7 control rooms with helpline numbers widely publicised for public access.

District Urban Development Agencies (DUDAs) will monitor field-level execution and rapid response mechanisms.

Additional Chief Secretary Usha Padhee reinforced accountability and continuous monitoring, stressing that strict adherence to SOPs is essential to protect vulnerable communities.

Senior officials, municipal commissioners, and executive officers across the state joined the meeting via video conferencing, ensuring a unified response.

The government’s proactive measures highlight a people-centric approach, prioritising water security, public safety, and administrative vigilance to combat extreme heat conditions.
